Second Pokémon Platinum and Rotom Key Event

I was the first in the family to pick up the new version of Pokémon for the DS. The version I purchased was Diamond. Some time later, I purchased Pearl and much later, Platinum right after it was released. This past weekend, I purchased another copy of Platinum during the Rotom Key event at Toys R Us.

This Key allows you to transform your Rotom into one of 5 different forms: Fridge (Ice), Washing Machine (Water), Lawn Mower (Grass), Fan (Flying).

So anyways, I was taking our first copy of Pokémon Platinum to Toys R Us to get the Key and it just so happens that Platinum was discounted by $5 dollars on this weekend as well. I figured that I might as well buy a copy so that we can get two keys instead of one!

After a weekend of playing my copy of Platinum, I ended up with all three starter Pokémon (Piplup, Turtwig, Chimchar) in my party. I'm having lots of fun with Platinum, however, I'm eager to go back and get all the rewards from past Mystery Gift events. I will have to investigate how to achieve that. :)

Prism for Nintendo DS

I picked up Prism for the DS for only $9.99 at GameStop, figuring that even if it wasn't all that great, I wouldn't be out much cash.

It's actually a pretty decent game. The puzzles are challenging, and there are a lot of them.

I ended up giving it to my son because it's not my kind of puzzle game (I like puzzles like Tetris and MahJong), and he loves it.

Well worth $9.99.

Nintendo DSi at Midnight

I've preordered my DSi from GameStop last night. I asked at the counter which of the two models were the most requested and the response was the Black one. Funny, I thought that the Light Blue one would be more popular due to it having more character. Which one did I get? The Light Blue one of course! I can't wait to try it out on Sunday.

(Don't tell anyone, but I also preordered Rhythm Heaven at the same time!)

There's a launch event going on at Universal CityWalk's GameStop store. It will be on Saturday, April 4, 2009 between 9pm and Midnight. The flier says that there will be Live Entertainment, "Interactive Units", Prizes and Giveaways. I attended the World of Warcraft Burning Crusade release party over there and it was great fun. I highly recommend attending if you are able.

Platinum Not Compatible with Pokemon Ranch

Well, it turns out that the American version of the Pokemon Platinum is not compatible with Pokemon Ranch.

There are some rumors here and there that the update will come out in the next few days. Others say that it will be a couple months.

In the meantime, I'll save up my pokemon to deposit on the Ranch when the update comes through.

We discovered Pokemon Ranch for the Wii today! How completely and totally adorable. Every day, the ranch hand brings a new pokemon to hang out with the Miis at the ranch. We can also transfer pokemon from our Diamond or Pearl games. The ranch goes up levels, giving us more space to play with the pokemon. And our friends on the Wii network can visit us.

All the kids love it. But my daughter is completely in love. And when we found out that we can make the pokemon go on parade, with streaming confetti, she just about lost it.

Our daughter's love for Pokemon is just about the cutest thing on the planet.

Our family already owns 3 DS Lites and yet, I am excited about possibly obtaining one of the new US exclusive light blue DSi models. The unfortunate issue with the DSi is that there is no support for older original GameBoy or GameBoy Advance titles. But no matter!

Pokemon Master Trainer Game

I saw a review for Pokemon Master Trainer and thought that maybe there was a new Pokemon board game available.

It's actually from 2001, and they are trying to sell it for $100! We've had a copy of this game for a long time. We found it at a garage sale for $1. Anyone wanna buy it from us for half the price of this other guy?

Seriously, though, it's not that great of a game, but the kids *love* it. So if you can find a cheap copy, and you have a Pokemon fan in the house, it's worth it.

Amazon has some copies for only $15. Maybe that's a good way to go if you can't find one at a garage sale.

Wii Fit No Good for Fitness?

There has been some criticism of the Wii Fit, saying that it's not a good tool for fitness because people don't stick to it.

First of all, any form of exercise is not effective if you don't stick with it. So duh.

But, beyond that, is it worth sticking to? Is it compelling enough?

Our kids certainly lost interest in it, especially when it was competing with Super Monkey Ball and Mario Kart.

So we bought My Fitness Coach, and told them it was part of their homeschooling. They could play My Fitness Coach or Wii Fit, but no other video games until they were done with their work.

Well, they like it so far! My Fitness Coach seems to have a lot more variety of exercises, but it doesn't have "games". So having both fitness programs gives them a choice.

So far, they are a good pair, and fun. I think that one could easily stick to a routine with one of these games if it fits their fitness interests, and they like to workout at home. And it certainly gets the kids off the couch and using muscles other than their fingers.

Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure for the DS

I asked my son if there are any DS games he's looking forward to getting. "Henry Hatsworth," he said.

I had no idea what it was. In the most recent issue of GameInformer, there is a mini-preview of it, and a full-page ad. It is a cross between action and puzzle game that has yet to see the DS scene.

It's only $29.99, and it has a lot of promise. I'll be looking out for it in March at GameStop.

Pokemon Platinum Pre-order, Due Out March 22

Pokemon Platinum is due out next month (March 22nd, to be specific) and my daughter wants this game.

It's currently available for pre-order on Amazon or through the local video game store. There is even talk about a limited number of pre-orders coming with a Giratina figurine.

Prima will be release the official game guide on the 22nd as well.

Pokemon Platinum for the DS is $34.99, which for a DS game, is fairly reasonable.

I haven't decided if I'll get a copy when it comes out, or to wait to hear some feedback before investing. My daughter, on the other hand, thinks I should pre-order. Oh, I'm so torn...

Google Earth is at once really cool, and really creepy. Seeing my house from space (and noticing that my car was in the driveway) makes me feel a bit watched. Dogs, Video Games, and the Love of Pokemon

About a month ago, we got a dog.

Instead of playing video games, I've been playing with my dog. The kids, they like their dog, however, playing video games is still high on their list of favorites.

We got an awesome game called LittleBigPlanet. Have you heard of it? It's taken over our house. In fact, yesterday, hubby and the kids downloaded all of the LBP songs from itunes so we can listen to the music during our two-day cross country drive next week.

Even in the car I can't get away from LBP.

Since they were so into LBP, I was very surprised to hear from my daughter that she does not want LBP stuff for Xmas, but Pokemon stuff.

Pokemon stuff? Where did that come from? I thought she was done with Pokemon?

She wants the leafgreen pokemon game for the Gameboy (she does not yet have a DS), she wants the new expansion cards, and she wants pokemon books.

Well what do you know? She's still into pokemon.

I wish Santa had known that before he bought all of her Xmas presents.

Webkinz for the First Time in Ages

Grinding and Level 70 in World of Warcraft

Just a side note on this Pokemon, Webkinz and Wii blog to say that I'm getting closer and closer to level 70 in World of Warcraft. (I have a warlock.) The truth is, I'm not looking forward to hitting the level cap.

I'm not quite sure how people can grind to level 70. The getting there is so much fun. They're missing out on a lot.

So, when I'm level 70, I'm not sure if I'm going to quit WoW and play the Wii as my entertainment.

The kids, however, are in the love with the Wii. Our four year old has a bit of trouble using the controller, so she uses the GameCube controller when she plays. Right now, Boomblox is the favorite. Xmas this year is going to be game-tastic.

Wii and WiiFit

Well, my husband went and did it. He bought us a Wii and a WiiFit.

Needless to say, the kids love it. I have to admit, I like the WiiFit.

Will it have long-lasting replay value? That's what I want to know. And, can I get a genuinely good workout with it?

We stopped by our local game store, where we used to regularly go to play Pokemon. The same crew was there, the gym leader was there, and they were having fun.

We didn't have our cards, so we didn't play. But the kids and hubby seemed enthusiastic to come back next week and participate.

My Pokemon Died in the Mystery Dungeon

Yesterday, my chikorita died while battling in a dungeon. The difficulty level jumped up between scenarios from being super easy to really difficult, and it wasn't all that fun. I haven't turned my DS back on since then. It'll be a few days before I'm willing to go back and try again.

I think I'm missing something about battles or using my stuff. There's got to be a way to turn to face the thing I'm battling without taking a turn. And, I'm thinking I need to position myself better so that totodile can attack too.

In any case, the Mystery Dungeon is not as easy as I thought it was going to be. That, at once, makes me frustrated, and pleasantly surprised.

Chikorita and Totodile in Pokemon Mysterday Dungeon: Explorers of Time

After answering the questions, I ended up with Chikorita. My daughter was so happy. I asked them which pokemon should be my partner. They told me, "Totodile!" So I picked them, but wasn't sure what that means.

World of Warcraft Addiction

Sometimes I wonder, "Am I addicted to World of Warcraft?"

I could compare myself to the die-hard WoW players, who raid for hours on end, and devote entire weekends to powerleveling, and forgo sleep. Compared to this crowd, I'm a WoW wimp.

But in my life, there are times I'll forgo doing something I should be doing in order to play WoW. An hour or two will fly by while running around Desolace whacking Slitherblades and Scorpashi. Turn ins here, running around there, whacking this monster, looting treasure chests, shopping the auction house, selling loot - it all becomes so compelling, it's literally a never-ending story.

If I played WoW hours like a raider, my life would fall apart - addicted or not, this kind of devoted game play isn't possible as a mom and a professional writer and speaker. Then if I add in all of my other interests, there really is very little time to play WoW and still get sufficient sleep.

Yet, I do. Sometimes I play WoW when the dishes are piled up, when the underwear drawer is empty, and when I have a deadline. "Just one more thing, then I'll camp out," I think. And that one more thing becomes two more things, then five, then ten. Before I know it, I have no time left to do those dishes, the laundry, the writing, before I'm forced to stop playing to feed my children or take them to a class.

So when is it an addiction, and when is it merely getting lost in the moment?

Just like food, alcohol, TV, and so many other pleasurable things in life, there has to be a way to find fun without crossing the line into obsession and mindlessness. The fine line between the two is hard to find in WoW, because the nature of the game requires a high level of participation in order to play effectively. Even a casual gamer has to spend at least a half hour or an hour in order to do anything significant. If you count running and flying time, the time it takes to find a safe place to camp, vending, turn ins, and all of the details that, individually, don't take much time at all, it adds up fast.

Having fun and being addicted are hard to separate in WoW, but I believe it's possible. If it's not, then I have to give up WoW, because after all, WoW is only one possible thing to do in life. And, I have a pretty good feeling, that it'll always be there to go back to.

New and Old Friends

Our son's guitar lesson was canceled yesterday, so I decided to take him to the local game store.

The game store is interesting because there are so many titles and genres to look at. Its very difficult to leave without buying anything.

Board games tend to have the highest value over time because there's just the box with no expansions or extensions or subscriptions. There are couple of games that I gravitate toward that we will most likely buy eventually. I inevitably pickup the box, look at the age range for the game and the cost and put it back down saying, "maybe next time". Games in this category include Kill Dr. Lucky and RoboRally. I've played Kill Dr. Lucky a little with the younger daughter, so I know that it would definitely have play longevity in the household. RoboRally requires quite a bit of strategy and has a million little pieces so that one is going to remain unbought for some time.

Another game that I look at frequently is Munchkin. Its a card based game with many different play sets. We've purchased most of the fantasy based sets and the kids have gone so far as to create some of their own cards including "Cool Guy" and "Pthpotsarela". The kids really like the game and we play it about 2-3 times a month. What's great about the game is that all of the different play sets are compatible, so you can play a Space, Spy, Ninja, Fantasy game of Muchkin with no problem. I look forward to expanding into one of these other play set themes.

TCGs, or Trading Card Games, occupy the other end of the balance from board games. To be a "current" player, you need to have at least the base set as well as the expansions on top of that set. For example, with Pokemon, you basically have to have cards from the last 3-4 sets in order to play. This is part of a sales strategy called planned obsolescence. If you buy a set of cards that are current now, you will only be able to play these cards for about 2 years or so. Playing TCGs can be financially draining if you want to keep up to date.

We, as a family, have been playing Pokemon for about 2 years, but recently, its been in retirement. The kids pull out the cards every now and then to look at them, but rarely is the game actually played. That said, the kids noticed recently via a TV commercial that a new expansion came out called Majestic Dawn. So, being at the game store, I felt compelled to buy the new starter decks as well as 4 booster packs.

I spent a bunch of time at the counter of the game store looking at the other TCG games as well. It just so happens that a new expansion for Magic: The Gathering was recently released called Shadowmoor. The wife and I used to play Magic in the mid-90s, so there is certainly some nostalgic appeal. I decided to pick up a couple of the theme decks for the Tenth Edition. I didn't buy into the new expansion because I wanted to ease into the game.

So, with a bunch of games in the bag, we headed home.

For Mother's Day, the family got me Pokémon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Time. Today, I finally got around to starting it up, and picking my pokemon.

After answering the questions, I ended up with Chikorita. I asked my daughter which companion pokemon would be the best, and she suggested Totodile.

We completed the first chapter, and sort of learned how to fight and use items. Now, we're at Wigglytuff's, in pokemon bootcamp.

So far, I'm liking it. Let's see what chapter 2 has in store.

Guitar Hero 4

Details for the upcoming Guitar Hero 4 have been released. It looks like it will be closer to Rock Band than the old Guitar Hero, with percussion and voice. In addition to the Guitar Hero goodness we all know and love, it will also have a studio mode, where a player can create his own songs and share them with friends.

Lego Factory - Online Lego Building Game

Lego's planning to go online. Can the magic of Lego really be captured by an online game?

Although this sounds kind of neat, and it makes sense that Lego would go this direction to stay in the game and toy market, it just seems...well...empty. The great thing about Lego is having the pieces in one's hand and manipulating them. When the structure or contraption is done, it's a real object to play with and enjoy.

But who knows, maybe they'll hit a sweet spot that can't be replicated in real life. In any case, I'm sure my hubby and the kids will at least want to give it a spin.

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon - Explorers of Darkness and Time

I just finished up Mahjong Quest on my Nintendo DS a couple of weeks ago. Although I don't play my DS a lot, I was tempted to look for another game while at Game Stop. The Pokemon Mystery Dungeon games almost had me.

They look really fun. And this review pretty much says it all. Dungeons, pokemon, gathering stuff. Sounds like my kind of game.

I'm going to hold off until I can find a used copy, though. I still have a few other games, like Zoo Tycoon, waiting for me. But the Mystery Dungeons do look like fun. I'll have to get one eventually, and see how it is compared to Pokemon Pearl.

This week, I hit two landmarks in Webkinz. 1) I got the Webkinz Diamond and 2) I hit 10,000 Kinzcash.

I'm not quite sure what I want to spend my cash on. I am thinking of trying out the Webkinz Academy. Although, I'm not sure what the gets me other than the satisfaction of checking something off of a list.

Also, I am thinking of adding to my pet's house. Although, I'm really not interested in interior decorating or clothes.

What else can I do with the cash?

This weekend, there is something new on Webkinz - the wheel of wishes! They introduced "tokens", which can be used at the Wish Factory. I wonder what is available there, and I wonder what the different ways of finding tokens are. So far, I've only found them on the wheel of wishes.

The Webkinz newspaper this morning tells us that there is a new plush Zingoz available anywhere you can buy Webkinz. Also, when you buy a Zingoz, you get a secret code that lets you play a totally new version of Wacky Zingoz, called Wacky Zingoz Extreme.

New Game on Webkinz - Atomicolicious

There's a new game in Webkinz. It's called Atomicolicious. You can only find it in the tournament area.

In this game, you match 3-4 color dots in a row to fill up your test tubes. If you fill them all up, you win! But watch out! Your opponent can make matches to empty your tubes.

It's a fun game. But I've noticed, that people in the tournament area don't like to finish a game if they are far behind in a game. It's hard to get a win when people always bail.

The Valentine's Fairy just delivered my new Unicorn Lil' Kinz Webkinz stuffed animal. I logged her in and got her set up.

Of course, she had to meet Beary and Carrot, our polar bear and rabbit Webkinz. The girls brought out those dolls, and they did a meet and greet.

I'm looking forward to good times with Olivia.

Pokemon Without Energy

My daughter has created a way to play Pokemon TCG without using any energy.

We each get a deck of pokemon - any pokemon, our pick. I'm not exactly sure of her mental algorithm, but she has one for determining which pokemon powers we can use, and when we can bring out our stage 1 and 2 pokemon. When we play, I ask her whether it's OK each time I want to use a power.

It's interesting playing this version with her. She's bypassed all the boring red tape of the game, and created a version that has only the fun stuff - attacking each other.

The downside - there's very little strategy. For a 7 year old, I think that's just fine.

Webkinz Valentine's Gift

We logged into Webkinz yesterday and got our Valentine's Day gift! It was a bouquet of roses, some chocolate and a Valentine's day card. Also, all day yesterday, the Super Wheel was available. We won some cool rare items - a hot air balloon, a rainy day window and HD Tv. All in all, a great Valentine's Webkinz Day!

Great Encounters for Pokemon

There is yet another Pokemon Diamond and Pearl TCG set available. It's called Great Encounters. The 7 year old is all abuzz with excitement that she can get new pokemon. Hubby is trying to find room in the Pokemon binder to fit new cards. I am wondering how anyone can keep up with it all.

Tonight, we offered to play the game with the 7 year old, and she wasn't all that interested in the "real" game. She had her own version. I don't know if we'll be back to the game store PokeGym any time soon.

Maybe our kids are too young to care about competition. Maybe there are so many cards now, that the kids are overwhelmed. I know I am! Even so, they kids still love their Pokemon cards. And they have them mostly memorized.

It's amazing what a 7 year old's brain can remember.

Apparently, there's a Webkinz scam going around where someone who claims to have special connections is asking for people's usernames and passwords so that she can give you stuff. NEVER give out your password. If someone is going to give you money or items, they can mail it to you in the game. They don't need your password.

I saw a post today that listed the various Webkinz cheats, like ways to get money, get items, or get high scores in the games.

That just doesn't seem fun, or right, to me.

This is supposed to teach kids how to earn money, and then use it wisely. It's supposed to teach kids how to take care of their pet. How is giving them a forever healthy pet, or tons of money, making the game better for them?

As for adults who play Webkinz and have to cheat, there really are no words to respond to that.

Playstation 3 - Should We Get One?

We have a Playstation 2. We're thinking of trading it in, and getting a Playstation 3. So far, the only con we can think of is that we won't be able to use our Guitar Hero 3 guitars in the new Playstation. Oh, and it's kind of expensive. Although, since our DVD player died, it might be worth the money to have an all-in-one player.

The Gem of the Day

In Webkinz, there is a daily gem hunt. Everyday, there is a gem of the day. Yesterday, we found it. Everyone was jumping up and down with excitement.

I thought there would be fireworks or some kind of super duper prize. Nothing like that. Just a little extra cash if we decide to sell it. Some people have said that they were offered 800+ kinzcash. We were only offered 250.

Also, we're not quite sure what the legendary crown of wonder would give us if we manage to collect all the gems. I suppose, we'll just have to wait.

Pokemon Ruby for Gameboy Advance

For our 7-year-old's birthday, we gave her a used copy of Pokemon Ruby for the Gameboy Advance. It's interesting watching her play. She likes to take one pokemon and work his little fingers to the bone until he evolves. And she's willing to fight level 5 pokemon over and over to accomplish that with out having to go to the pokecenter too often. She's the pokemon master!

I've been finding some great Webkinz info. Today I found out three things from this informative Webkinz post:

1) Arte, the Curio Shop vendor, will tell you secret things when he likes you. There are 6 levels of friendship. And he has different text for telling you what level you're at.

2) Each mine has specific gems to find. The list of gems and which mine they are in are listed here.

3) Rare items are only available in the curio shop certain times of day.

Last night I snuck on to Webkinz and answered some quiz questions to give my daughter a little extra spending cash, and open up some of the available jobs. I'm not sure if Webkinz would be as fun if I weren't being sneaky about it.

Proud Mother of Two Webkinz

My daughters have decided that I am their Webkinz' mother. They are not the mother, I am.

My two new children are Beary, a white polar bear Webkinz, and Carrot, a white rabbit webkinz.

Beary and Carrot "ask" for the same hugs and kisses my other two daughters get. They come to me when they are hungry. They also required to be strapped in a seatbelt when we are driving in the car.

I had no idea that when I got my daughters' a Webkinz, that the would be my responsibility too.

The upside is, if the Webkinz are my children, doesn't that mean I can log in and play with them whenever I want to?

Rock Band Is the Perfect Party Game for Kids

Last night, we had a New Year's Party. This was a family-friendly party. We had video games and board games.

For four hours, the board games were ignored. Everyone was too busy playing Rock Band.

And I mean everyone. Moms, dads, kids, neighbors, everyone. The only exception were the very young (under 5) kids who were a bit overwhelmed with all the controls.

We borrowed the Xbox to have Rock Band available. It's going to be hard to let it go tomorrow. It's a great game for parties. Although, our neighbor had a complaint: there weren't enough country songs. And my complaint, there aren't enough female vocalists. So, all Rock Band needs to do for version #2 is to add a couple Dixie Chicks songs.

New Year's Is the Holiday for Gamers

We're throwing a New Year's Eve party. Low key. No major event planning. Just games, drinks and food. The food and drink we had to run to the store for. The games, we had plenty of those.

We have board games, card games, Xbox, Gamecube and PS2. We're inviting neighbors and friends. People want to play games? They know the house to come to.

It's not going to be a big crowd. And that suits us fine. Gives us more chances to have a turn playing Rock Band.

Two New Webkinz for Christmas - and a new Wii.

We have two new Webkinz critters in our household. My older daughter got a white rabbit, and my son got a black cat. They were both very happy.

We were able to log in on Christmas day for just long enough to get their Webkinz set up. But right when we were done, the server went down. We tried to get back in through the day, but it didn't work.

I wonder if they had server over-load from all the Christmas Webkinz.

We tried to log in yesterday too, but it gave us a message that the servers were being updated. How frustrating to have down time when it's obvious so many people will be logging in with their new Webkinz.

Fortunately, my dad got the little bros and sis a Wii. So we're plenty distracted.

This is the Webkinz my older daughter wants for Christmas. Or at least, that's the one she wanted two weeks ago. I asked her again which one she wanted, and she said, "Anything is fine. I just want one."

Right now, we have one single Webkinz. My younger daughter carries it with her everywhere. Sleeps with it. Plays tea with it. Asks me to kiss it good morning and give it love.

2 Hours of Webkinz a Week

I was reading a blog today that said 2 hours of computer time a week is plenty for kids. And Webkinz are making kids play on the computer all hours of the day instead of reading and other things. (Wait, don't kids do this in school?)

Here's the question on my mind: how can we get everything done on two hours a week? There's feeding, Wheel of Wow, games, Bingoz... the list is endless.

Is It Fair to Say "No Ads" In Our Commercial-based Society?

Webkinz has ads. Some people don't like it and are trying to get them taken out.

IMHO, ads give the company more resources to have more fun stuff. So long as they aren't intrusive, annoying or discontinuous, why not? The ads are for things the kids know exist anyway (ie. Alvin and the Chipmunks movie).

I thought Webkinz was pretty straight forward. You go in, you play games, you spin the wheel of wow, feed your pet, log out.
But noooooo. It's not at all that simple. There are secrets.
The first secret I found out about was that we get extra stuff if we click on the ads. The second secret I discovered today was that the little critters can cook food.
I asked my daughters about cooking. They said, "No". But when I asked them about the grill or the blender, they said they didn't have enough money to buy them.
So, like in the real world, the more money you have, the more secrets you have access to.

Collecting Webkinz - Is It an Obsession or a Learning Experience?

My daughter has 1 polar bear webkinz. I really like webkinz, but I'm on the fence about whether or not having more than one critter is a positive learning experience or an obsession in the making. Or perhaps, it's merely collecting, like kids used to do with stamps.

We're getting our other two kids a webkinz for Xmas. We have one computer. That will certainly be a lesson in shared computer time, if anything.

I found out today that if the girls click on the ads in Webkinz, they might get free stuff. I have to say, that's a super smart marketing idea. It doesn't cost a dime to implement, and it compels lots of people to click on an ad they would otherwise ignore.

Pokemon in Japan

Hubby just got back from Japan today. He brought with him some Pokemon bath toys. He also told me that the Pokemon store in Tokyo is closed.

On the upside, his trip to Japan inspired him to want to take us next time. I sure hope we can go!
